Healthy Lifestyle – Maintaining a Healthy Balance Between Physical and Emotional Wellness

The first element of “health” is being healthy. This definition differs from person to person and even culture to culture. Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is “an overall state of good health that is achieved through appropriate personal and interpersonal practices”. Various definitions have also been used over the years for various purposes. For the purposes of this article, we will define health as the ability to thrive independently, enjoy life and perform your best at work.

Stress is considered a major contributor to many diseases and illness today. The main article on the WLS website points out that stress affects almost every organ in the body; and this includes both the mind and the body. It is not only the mind that is affected but all systems in the body are effected by stress. Stressed individuals are often diagnosed with high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, ulcers and arthritis.

One of the keys to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is through a healthy diet. Many people have poor eating habits due to their job or personal life. There are many guidelines provided by the World Health Organization to eat healthy. It includes eating five portions of fruits and vegetables per day and one to two servings of whole grains, dairy products and legumes. Consuming foods that are not considered to be a part of a healthy lifestyle can actually worsen a persons health status, in some cases causing serious illness and disease. Some examples of these foods are junk foods, fast food and processed foods.

Living a healthy lifestyle can reduce the severity and frequency of illness and chronic diseases. A person’s physical environment plays a crucial role in maintaining good health. A healthy physical environment includes a balanced mix of light, fresh air and space, clean and sterile surfaces, clean cooking and preparation areas, comfortable temperatures, ample restful sleep, and the provision of adequate resources such as rest houses, places for resting, and social support networks.

The emotional health of a person has an impact on their physical wellness. Emotional wellness includes having an awareness and control of one’s emotions, including stress, depression, anger, anxiety, loneliness and other similar emotions. It is important to seek help from a professional if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. Your mental, emotional, physical and self-image all play a role in your health status. If you are suffering from any of the above illness, then it is essential to consult a health care professional to determine the root cause and seek treatment.

It is important to remember that wellness does not simply involve physical being. The emotional and the personal health are equally important. It is important to maintain a balance between the two. This can be achieved through a healthy diet and regular exercise. A good personal hygiene can also contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
