The Basics of Wellness

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is an “uneven condition of the body in which the presence of diseases or its incidence is less than optimal.” A number of definitions have also been used over the years for different purposes. The dictionary definition of health is, “exceeding the normal limits of life.” Another frequent use of the term is to mean “exceeding the normal condition of health.” The definition most commonly applied in the medical profession is that of “the quality of the life of a person.”

One aspect of having good health is the avoidance or reduction of the risk of death and disease. This can be done through a number of means. The first definition of health that was used by modern society was, “the state of being able to endure minor or major diseases.” In addition, there is the second definition, “health is the condition of being able to cope up with the consequences of minor and major diseases or impairment.” The third definition is, “having healthy, normal, functional capacity; the capacity to work normally and to perform the functions of a human being.”

Maintaining good health status requires a lot of daily effort on the part of an individual. Healthy eating and exercise, sleeping on a regular schedule, quitting smoking, and avoiding physical inactivity contribute to an individual’s good health status. Individuals with good health status are more likely to have more resources at their disposal to deal with minor and major illnesses. They have access to hospitals, laboratories, and other health services. These individuals are less likely to die earlier or suffer grave diseases.

In addition, individuals who are healthy have greater opportunities to take advantage of wellness education, such as those offered through schools, businesses, and organizations. These individuals have the power to shape their own destiny by choosing careers and participating in social activities that promote physical well-being. For example, students at schools have the opportunity to learn about the value of physical fitness, proper nutrition, and self-esteem. Likewise, students in organizations gain skills such as self-awareness, leadership, and teamwork that they can use to their own benefit in the future. On the other hand, healthy individuals have better access to physical, emotional, and mental health services that can help them live a productive and successful life.

In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and achieve wellness, an individual must also take steps to address potential health problems. For instance, if an individual experiences depression, he or she should seek medical assistance to treat this disorder. On the other hand, if an individual experiences physical discomfort, he or she should learn appropriate ways to manage the problem, instead of punishing oneself.

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, an individual can avoid the development of many health problems. He or she can also get rid of unnecessary stress and learn to lead a healthy lifestyle. Finally, a person can achieve wellness by making good choices and taking responsibility for his or her well-being. He or she can choose to eat a healthy diet, engage in physical activities, maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule, and reduce the risk factors for diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not only good for overall health, but it also has a positive impact on a person’s social and financial well-being.
