The Growing Popularity of Action and Adventure Games

In the past decade, computer games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment available on the market. Playing games has been found to be a healthy pastime for many people, who find that they can relax, release tension and get some fun while doing so. The following article will discuss the different types of games that are available on computers today.

A game is essentially a structured type of activity, normally undertaken for fun or entertainment, and at times used as a teaching tool as well. Board games, trivia games, word games and simulation games all fall into this category. Strategy games to give the player a chance to engage in the process of thinking about and planning strategies against an opponent. Board games give the player the opportunity to take on the role of the central character and do everything from earn coins to fighting opponents. All of these provide the opportunity to use logic and problem solving skills in order to emerge victorious.

A large number of computer games fall into the category of “idle games”. idle games are those which provide a simple interface for the player to perform activities such as completing commands, planning actions and earning rewards. Computer games that are primarily role playing games will typically require the player to spend a great deal of time in order to advance the storyline and to ultimately achieve the objective.

There are two major categories of video games today: action and puzzle. The action genre includes first person shooter games, third-person shooting games, fighting games, flight simulators, action-adventure games and simulation games. Puzzle genres include card games, word games, crossword puzzles, logic games and memory games. A large number of popular console games belong to the puzzle genre. The biggest growth area for video games is within the realm of action/adventure. Both adventure and action/adventure games require the player to think logically and creatively to emerge victorious.

While action-adventures are generally thought of as very linear in nature, there are a few exceptions. Massively multi-player online role playing games (MMORPG) such as World of Warcraft are an example of an action-adventure game genre. Another example is puzzle games, which often include elements of adventure. Layers of Secrets is an excellent example of a puzzle game that successfully combines adventure with puzzle play.

In contrast, adventure games typically provide an environment in which the players have to utilize logic and creativity to solve problems. The majority of this type of video game is character-driven, in that players will need to decide which characters they will support through gameplay. A good example of an adventure game is Zelda, which allows its players to manipulate Link (the protagonist) through a variety of puzzles and interactive scenes in order to complete the game. The majority of action adventure games however are character-driven, although this is beginning to change. As more casual game players enter the scene, character-driven gameplay is expected to make a major debut in the genre.
