How Video Games Benefit the Brain

Gaming can be a healthy fitness for the mind, especially disguised as entertainment. Several studies have established that playing computer games regularly can improve grey matter in the human brain and increase brain plasticity, or the ability to change the function of brain cells. Grey matter is generally associated with higher cognitive functions such as problem solving and increased long term memory. But it was discovered that people who play computer games are more able to solve problems than people who don’t.


There are three distinct types of games: real-world, non-real-world, and board games sports. Real-world games include racing, strategy games, fighting, and computer and board games sports such as baseball, soccer, basketball, and track and field. Non-real-world games include word games, trivia games, card games, minigames, musical toys, and simulation games. Board games sports, including solitaire, continue to be popular. It is believed that the areas of the brain responsible for visual memory and movement are the same parts that are affected during card games like Scrabble. Card games like Bingo have been found to have similar effects on certain parts of the brain as well. These games require players to use their hands, minds, and bodies in order to play.

The third section of the human brain that players would want to study is the motor area. This is where the ‘gears’ of the game happen. Players need to use their feet, hands, and bodies in order to win points, buy items, or defeat opponents. Motor skills include walking, lifting, throwing, and running.

Although all three areas of the brain have many functions, most gamers would agree that the ability to think logically and quickly make the brain work at its best. It provides an environment where people can explore their outside interests and interact with others who share the same interests.
